Rediscovering the Kingdom of God
Season Overview
If you asked most Jesus followers to summarize His primary message, you would likely receive a variety of answers.
Some would say salvation. Others would say forgiveness. Some would say heaven.
Others would point to grace, morality, evangelism, or discipleship.
While each of these themes is important, Jesus Himself consistently emphasized something else. Throughout the Gospels, His central message was remarkably clear:
“The Kingdom of God is at hand.”
The Kingdom was not a side topic. It was not merely one doctrine among many. It was the organizing reality around which Jesus built His ministry, teachings, parables, miracles, and invitation to discipleship.
Yet for many modern Christians, the Kingdom has become a forgotten idea.
We often reduce Christianity to personal salvation, church participation, or preparation for life after death. While these realities matter, they are not the whole story. The result is a vision of faith that is often smaller than the one Jesus proclaimed.
This is what we call the Forgotten Kingdom.
The Forgotten Kingdom is the loss of Jesus’ central message and its replacement with smaller stories that cannot sustain deep discipleship or human flourishing.
When the Kingdom fades from view, Christianity can become primarily about information, behavior modification, religious activity, or personal improvement. We may sincerely follow Jesus while missing the larger reality He continually invited people to enter.
But what is the Kingdom?
The Kingdom of God is not primarily a place. It is not merely heaven after death. It is not a political system, denomination, or institution.
The Kingdom is God’s effective reign and rule.
It is the reality of life lived under God’s loving authority, where His will is done, His presence is welcomed, and His life is increasingly expressed.
This understanding transforms how we view discipleship. Spiritual formation is not simply self-improvement. It is becoming the kind of person who naturally participates in God’s reign.
The Christian life is not primarily about escaping the world someday. It is about learning to live with God in His world today. It is not about “getting to Heaven.” It is about increasingly bringing Heaven to Earth.
Throughout this season, we explore some of the most important questions facing modern Christianity:
- What is the Kingdom of God?
- Why did Jesus speak about it so often?
- How has the Kingdom been forgotten?
- How does the Kingdom reshape our understanding of salvation?
- What does it mean to become a Kingdom dweller?
- How does the Kingdom influence everyday life, relationships, work, and purpose?
Most importantly, we discover that the invitation of Jesus is far larger than many of us have imagined.
The Kingdom is not a future destination. It is an invitation into a new way of living and being right now.
The Forgotten Kingdom may be one of the greatest losses within modern Christianity. Yet it is also one of the greatest opportunities. As we recover the vision of the Kingdom, we begin to recover the larger story that gives meaning to discipleship, transformation, and life with God.
